This is all too convenient

Essence.com is reporting a novel allegedly written by Michael Jackson himself is being shopped around to publishers. The novel contains illustrations conceptualized by Jackson and tells the story of a rock star at the pinnacle of his career who begins to obsess about death and becomes disillusioned with his fame and money. That plot line sounds eerily familiar doesn't it? It sounds like the image of Michael's life painted by the media in the wake of his death. I just find it awfully convenient a thinly-veiled memoir has suddenly surfaced and just happens to be completed. Perhaps I'm being cynical.

Did you know Joy Bryant wears a weave?

Did you know Joy Bryant wears a weave? Well, I didn't until I read her blog musings on maintaining a weave and Tyra's unveiling of her own hair. Click here to read her original blog post. I have posted my own comment below. What are your thoughts?
I had absolutely no idea you wore a weave, Joy. While I have natural hair I say wear what you want to wear when you want to wear it. (Now, I'm not above clowning someone whose weave looks like pre-school yarn, but wear what makes you happy.) The only thing that gave me pause was your statement that you feal "human again" after getting your weave done. From that statement I infer you somehow felt "inhuman" wearing your natural God-given hair. I find that a bit sad because you are a beautiful woman; the insecurities you experience are all too human. My greatest hope for all weave-wearers is they hold their own hair in highest regard and see weave as just another option in their fashion arsenal.

Cracker Barrel Attack-ATL

Clayton County prosecutors said Wednesday they are trying to have felony charges reinstated against a man who attacked an Army reservist in front of her child outside a Morrow Cracker Barrel.

A judge dropped a felony child cruelty charge against Troy D. West, Jr. He was released from the Clayton County jail Friday -- two days after being arrested for striking Tashawnea Hill in front of her 7-year-old daughter.

District Attorney Tracy Graham Lawson said she may file felony charges against West. "We're reviewing the police reports and talking to witnesses to determine whether felony charges should be presented to the grand jury," Lawson said Wednesday.

West, 47, is charged with battery, disorderly conduct and cruelty to children -- all misdemeanors. He is also the subject of an FBI investigation for committing a possible a hate crime. Police said West, who is white, yelled racial slurs at Tashawnea Hill as he was kicking and punching her in the head.

The attack occurred as Hill and her daughter were leaving the Morrow restaurant and West was heading inside, Morrow Police Capt. James Callaway said. Hill told West to be careful after the restaurant door came close to striking her child, Callaway said. That's when West became enraged and attacked the woman, police said.

“She kept saying, ‘Sir, I’m a United States soldier, don’t do this,’ ” Callaway said. On Wednesday, the Atlanta office of the FBI said they have launched a "preliminary" investigation for a possible hate crime, at the request of Morrow Police.

West told Morrow police he became upset because Hill spit on him after accusing him of trying to hit her daughter, according to the police report. But several witnesses said they never saw Hill spit on West.

West remains free on a $12,500 bond. He is scheduled to return to court on Sept. 28. West runs Troy's Paint & Body & Auto Salvage in Poulan, which is in south Georgia near Albany.

We are in no way advocating violence, but perhaps you might want to write a letter to the district attorney's office, the local chamber of commerce, or the Better Business Bureau to let them know how you feel about this case.

Did you watch the VH1 Divas concert

I was reluctant to watch this show because, while I consider some of the performers to be very good, I do not think any of them have paid the dues to be considered a true diva. I certainly balk at the idea of bestowing the title "diva" (with the positive connotation) on a teenager. Aretha Franklin is a diva. Whitney Houston is a diva. Celine Dion is a diva. Miley Cyrus and Jordin Sparks are NOT divas. Still, the show had some very good performances.

Paula Abdul hosted (thank you Vh1 for giving her a job) and almost fell off the stage during her performance. (Way to dispel those drinking rumors, Paula.) She also lampooned her American Idol replacement, Ellen DeGeneres, by donning menswear and a blonde wig and dancing around. It was good times, I tell ya.

Unsealed Court Documents Reveal Allowance From Michael Jackson's Estate to Mother and Children

Michael Jackson's mother is receiving $86,804 per month from her son's estate to support herself and her three grandchildren, according to court records released Thursday.

Katherine Jackson is one of the primary beneficiaries of her son's estate along with the late pop singer's three young children and unnamed charities.

Over the course of a year, Jackson's mother and children are slated to receive more than $1 million in support from the estate. Katherine Jackson's monthly allowance is $26,804; the children's allowance is $60,000 per month.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff approved a monthly stipend for Katherine Jackson and her three grandchildren in August. The amount of the payments had been sealed until Thursday.

Katherine Jackson has been named the children's permanent guardian. They are currently living at the Jackson family home, Hayvenhurst, located in the San Fernando Valley.

Katherine Jackson's $26,804 per month pays for an assistant, housekeeper, driver, utilities, clothing, grooming and other expenses.

Mariah keeps saying "Obsessed" wasn't about Eminem

French radio show NRJ interviewed Mariah Carey on Wednesday. She continues to deny "Obsessed" is about Eminem or any crazed rapper/stalkers in particular.

Mariah: I wrote that song for all the people who have ever been in a situation where somebody’s obsessed with them and they keep texting them and bothering them and telling people that they had a relationship with them and lying about them. So it’s for everybody – all the people in the world who have ever been annoyed by somebody.

Radio host: So it’s not...Eminem?
Mariah: I don’t even know who that is. [Laughter] I wrote the song and I’m very happy with it. And I’m happy with my new album. So I don’t know if somebody wants to write their little songs. I haven’t heard them on the radio, I don’t know what’s going on with that. They don’t seem to play them here in America. I’m not sure so I don’t know.

It's doubtful Lil' Mama is having an affair with Jay-Z

We have received a reliable tip that the rumor Lil' Mama is having an affair with Jay-Z is false. You will recall there was palpable tension Sunday night when Lil' Mama inserted herself into the end of Jay-Z's and Alicia Keys' performance at the MTV VMA's. Well, Lil' Mama has been clowned all over the internet and has issued numerous explanations and apologies for her behavior. Rumor had it she hopped up on stage to finally end Beyonce's speculation she was having a hot and heavy affair with Bey's hubby Jay. Supposedly her motivation was frustration with having to sneak around and Jay's reluctance to break the news to Bey.

Our sources say Jay has turned down a lot of industry who have tried to get at him including Mariah and Mary J. Blige. Anyhow, I told y'all I didn't believe that mess. I just can't see Jay messing up his business arrangement marriage with Bey over Lil' Mama. Still, there is no accounting for taste.

Beyonce is being sued by Abercrombie & Fitch

Just days after news Beyonce plans to launch a perfume line under Coty called 'Fierce' hit the net reports surface that clothing retailer Abercrombie & Fitch has filed a trademark infringement lawsuit against her. Abercrombie & Fitch says any use of the word 'fierce' in Beyonce's perfume name would create consumer confusion with their own signature scent 'Fierce' of which they claim over $190 million in sales. Attorneys for Coty and Beyonce have yet to issue a public statement. Beyonce released this statement with the announcement of her perfume launch: "While I love various perfumes, I haven't found a scent that truly personifies me as a woman. Working with Coty, I was able to turn my ideal fragrance into a reality by creating an alluring and sophisticated fragrance; one that's reflective of my inner power."
Meanwhile, Kelly Rowland is still sucking up even though she has left the fold. She called Beyonce "classy" and "gracious" for the way she conducted herself at the VMA's last weekend.

Good ole' Cheronda decides to cop a squat in the property, give lavish parties and keep them going by not putting the desirable beachfront home on the market.

Neighbors (Mrs. Kravitz) in the Malibu neighborhood, which counts actor Tom Hanks among its residents, said they saw Guyton’s family staying at the house and that Guyton apparently hosted a party in August at which guests were ferried to the beach house from a yacht offshore.

In a statement yesterday, Wells Fargo said its internal investigation concluded that "a single team member was responsible for violating our company policies. As a result, employment of this individual has been terminated."

Amber Does Atlanta Elle

Kanye West's favorite accessory girlfriend, Amber Rose had a *cough* high fashion *cough* shoot for the October 2009 issue of Elle Magazine styled by none other than 'Ye. As expected there was booty tooting and crotch shots. I just don't think Amber will ever be taken seriously in the modeling world even though her looks are striking and her bod is fantastic. Designers don't want a model who will stand out more than their clothes, nor do they want anyone with curves. Aside from all that, the world of high fashion seriously frowns on anything blatantly pornographic and most of Amber's shoots approach that realm. Smooth, Complex, and King are always willing to show some cheek so she'll be okay.

Retailer's Stunt puts NYPD on Alert.....

An offbeat marketing gimmick slated for this week may have landed Burlington Coat Factory in hot water with New York’s Finest.

The discount retailer plans to leave 500 unattended messenger bags around lower Manhattan Wednesday and Thursday to promote the opening of its new “store in a store” concept, the Factory. Each bag will contain a gift card worth up to $500 and feature a tag on the outside identifying it as a “gift” from Burlington Coat Factory.

Maybe unattended bags are no big deal in Burlington, NJ — home of the company’s headquarters — but eight years after the 9/11 attacks, with the MTA’s “If you see something, say something” slogan still in full effect, these totes are likely to set off some serious red flags. The NYPD is aware of the promotion and say if they keep the bags off public property everythang will be everythang.

Hope noone thinks like I think.

Michael Vick elevated to Eagles roster

The Philadelphia Eagles elevated embattled pro-baller Michael Vick to their 53-man roster yesterday paving the way for him to practice with his teammates and return to regular play. To make room for Vick, the Eagles released wide receiver Hank Baskett. Baskett is expecting a child with fiance and 'Girl Next Door' Kendra, a Playboy Playmate and former girlfriend of Hugh Hefner. Baskett had 72 catches for 1,052 yards and six touchdowns in 48 games with the Eagles. Vick will be eligible to play in the September 27th game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

You can call me Jimmy

Former President Jimmy Carter called out Rep. Joe Wilson of the "you lie!" fame as a racist. Pres. Carter said Wilson's outburst was "based on racism." and rooted in fears of a black planet president. "I think it's based on racism," Carter said. "There is an inherent feeling among many in this country that an African-American should not be president."
Rep. Wilson's son (Why isn't his publicist or staff making statements for him?) issued a denial saying his father doesn't even laugh at off-color jokes.

See, this is why Jimmy's my man.

Instead of trying to get you healthcare, Pres. Obama has to deal with Kanye

The fallout continues from the dissemination of off-the-record remarks Pres. Obama made about Kanye West's outburst at Sunday's VMA Awards. The President was sitting down to do an interview with a CNBC correspondent when he was informally asked what he thought about Kanye's antics:

"I thought that was really inappropriate," Obama says. "What are you butting in (for)? ... The young lady seems like a perfectly nice person. She's getting her award. What's he doing up there?"
The reporter asks, "Why would he do it?"
"He's a jackass," says Obama, while several others laugh.
Obama quickly asks the remarks be kept private,"Come on guys," he says. "Cut the president some slack. I've got a lot of other stuff on my plate."

The thing is, a group of ABC reporters were eavesdropping on the conversation via their shared fiber optic line. Before they even filed any stories on it or cleared it with editors, ABC reporters began to e-mail contacts the information and at least three ABC reporters tweeted Obama's remarks via their Twitter accounts. The statements were quickly deleted, but this being the age of the Internet, they were captured and widely disseminated.

Pres. Obama is hardly the first president to be caught with an unexpectedly "hot" mic: in 1984, President Ronald Reagan joked that he had outlawed the Soviet Union and that "the bombing begins in five minutes" while waiting to make a speech. George W. Bush called a reporter an obscene name during the 2000 presidential campaign.

For once, Kanye was speechless

Just by sheer luck, Jay scheduled an appearance by Kanye, Jay-Z, and Rihanna to perform their newest hit "Run This town." After Kanye's antics Sunday night, Leno's people must have been salivating at the ratings bonanza from having Kanye on there. Kanye asked Leno if he could make some impromptu remarks about the incident at the VMA's. Kanye came on and, I believe, sincerely apologized for taking the stage and hurting Taylor Swift. When Leno asked him what his mother would have thought about all of it, Kanye choked up and became speechless. The entire studio was dead silent for almost a minute. I believe Kanye was sincere because he figeted throughout the entire interview and appeared on the verge of tears after Leno brought up his mother. He appeared without his sunglasses and without his coat. He looked like a small child who had been sent to the principal's office and threatened with a call to his parents. It was uncomfortable to watch at home and, I'm sure, uncomfortable for Leno as well. Kanye reiterated again he has not taken any time off from the music business since his mother passed; he vowed to take some time and reevaluate his plans for the future. I sincerely hope he takes a good hard look at the direction his life has taken and makes some serious changes in his own attitude, actions, and entourage.

Patrick Swayze passed away

Actor Patrick Swayze passed away yesterday at the age of 57. He had been suffering from pancreatic cancer. Swayze was catapulted to fame in the movie Dirty Dancing in 1987. The movie spawned a cultural phenomenon with traveling revues and Dirty Dancing parties all over the world. He followed that up with another smash hit film, Ghost, also starring Whoopi Goldberg and Demi Moore. Whoopi credits Swayze for helping her earn her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for the film. His other films include "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar," which also starred Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo--all of them in drag--Point Break, Red Dawn, and Roadhouse. My favorite Patrick Swayze role was one of his lesser-know films, 1983's The Outsiders, an adaptation of an S.E. Hinton novel. The movie also starred rising young stars Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, C. Thomas Howell, Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, and Tom Cruise.

After many years out of the spotlight, Swayze came back to star in the critically-acclaimed television series The Beast. The show would air for only one season as Swayze's health failed. All the while his family and friends hoped for a remission. In an op-ed piece in the Washington Post, Swayze addressed Congress on behalf of cancer supporters and asked for NIH funding for cancer research as part of the economic stimulus package. Swayze is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lisa Niemi.

Timeline of Kanye's Public Explosions

Skip to the 0:42 mark to see rare video of Kanye as a child

I love how everyone is shocked about Kanye's behavior last night. These people must not have been paying attention to him all these years. Remember when he said George Bush doesn't care about black people right after Hurricane Katrina? Or what about his CAPS LOCK rambling blog posts where he rips into everyone who refuses to let him be great.

In 2004 Kanye walked out of the American Music Awards when he lost out on the Best New Artist award to country singer Gretchen Wilson. He was quoted as saying "I felt like I was definitely robbed, and I refused to give any politically correct bullsh--ass comment ... I was the best new artist this year." Kanye alluded to an anti-Kanye conspiracy and vowed never to return to the AMAs.

In early 2005 Kanye staged his own death and resurrection during his performance at the Grammys to protest the media attention towards him prior to the show. He felt it was unwarranted to put him under a microscope waiting for him to explode, so he donned angel wings to show his innocence. (I know, I know.) A week before the ceremony he told MTV he would have "a real problem" if he didn't win Album of the Year for Late Registration. He said he thought voters would not choose him because he was so outspoken about George Bush's handling of the Hurricane Katrina disaster. Kanye criticized hip hop magazines Vibe and the Source for not considering his album a classic. During the interview he also compared himself to Tom Cruise (come again?) and justified his tantrums because he spent over $600,000 of his own money on the album. Since he won that year for Best Rap Album, instead of a rant he said, "A lot of people were wondering what I was going to do if I didn't win anything ... I guess we'll never know."

In 2006 'Ye stormed the stage during another act's acceptance speech when his video "Touch the Sky" lost out to theirs at the MTV European Music Awards because his video "cost a million dollars and Pamela Anderson was in it." Kanye later admitted to drinking before the tirade. (Are we seeing a trend here?)

Kanye was reportedly guzzling Hennessey (people still drink that?) straight from the bottle last night before the show. Yeezy's behavior started long before his mother Donda's untimely death. How much do you want to bet he was one of those children who threw loud public tantrums to get his way?

NFL announcer disses Whoopi

If you watched the Detroit Lions game on Sunday did you hear NFL announcer, Chris Myers, totally diss Whoopi Goldberg? During the first quarter of the game Chris and another announcer were talking about a player who went from playing with the Steelers last year to the Lions this year.was on the Pittsburgh Steelers last season but now plays for Detroit. He said, "Going from two Super Bowls in Pittsburgh to the winless Detroit team -- that's like going from dating Beyonce to Whoopi Goldberg." Oooh, that's gotta burn.

Beyonce's PR machine works overtime and Kanye apologized again

For those who insisted Beyonce does not have a PR machine working 24/7/365 behind the scenes, TMZ is reporting Papa Knowles approached Taylor Swift practically the moment she arrived from the subway set to see if she wanted a new manager if she was okay. They discussed ways to make things right and finally settled on Beyonce giving up part of her acceptance time if she won. I'm certain he saw this as an opportunity to make Beyonce look like a class act as well as issue reparations to Taylor. It was a win-win situation and a shrewd business move. He ain't the boss for nothing. By the way, Dreamgirls--starring Beyonce--aired last night, but I'm sure you knew that with all the Beyonce talk of late.

Oh and Kanye issued yet another apology. Like it makes a difference.

"I feel like Ben Stiller in "Meet the Parents" when he messed up everything and Robert De Niro asked him to leave... That was Taylor's moment and I had no right in any way to take it from her. I am truly sorry."

Donald Trump, himself no stranger to mediawhoring, called for a boycott of Kanye and his moneymaking ventures. He also called Kanye on the carpet for his faux-Staning for Beyonce. "He couldn't care less about Beyonce. It was grandstanding to get attention."

Lil' Mama issued an apology for her antics at the VMA's

Lil' Mama issued an apology for jumping on the stage at the end of Jay-Z's and Alicia Keys' set. The only problem is people barely noticed what happened. Folks were either talking about Janet's tribute to Michael, Kanye's assholishness, or Lady Ga Ga's fuckery. Even Russell Brand's over the top comments while hosting barely got a bat of an eyelash. Since no one was talking about her antics, she decided to try to stir the pot again with an apology. Here is what Lil' Mama had told MTV:

"I did not mean any disrespect towards Jay-Z or Alicia Keys. I admire them
and look up to them as role models. 'Empire State of Mind' had my emotions
running high. In that moment I came up onstage to celebrate my two icons singing
about NY."

Juicy Update: Maybe I was wrong and Lil' Mama did get a little more shine for herself than I thought. People are whispering that something went down backstage between Beyonce and Jay-Z and Jay and Lil' Mama. If you watch the video of her stagecrashing, she is mean mugging Hova and Bey. Supposedly, not only is Jay-Z having an affair with Rihanna he has been getting it in with Mama, too. (You know Jay likes those strong jawlines.) Mama got tired of all the sneaking around and dirty looks so she wanted to put it out there in Beyonce's face so there would be no mistake. I don't really believe this rumor, but I am shaking my head if this is true. He must have a a double prescription of Cialis.

Lenny Kravitz spent some time with friends recently

Lenny sent out this picture of himself on his Twitter account.
Um....yeah. This isn't helping the rumors.

Serena lost it on Saturday

I think her conduct was certainly unsportsmanlike and less that what I would expect from one of the Williams sisters. They know they have always had to be better than everyone else in the sport just to be accepted and respected. I remember when other players did not want to change in the same locker room with them and complained constantly about their outfits, on court grunts, and the beads in their hair.

At the end of the day, I can understand, if not condone, Serena's outburst because the judge was incorrect. Not only did Serena lose the point on the judge's bad call, she lost another point which cost her the match. She was fined $10,000 and of course is out of the running for the title and prize money. The outburst may affect some of her endorsements and there is talk of further sanctions. All of this is a bit much considering the notorious conduct of Bobby Knight and John McEnroe. McEnroe had outbursts like this virtually every time he played.

Y'all pray for Kandi Burrus

Kandi Burrus, formerly of Xscape and now a star on Real Housewives of Atlanta, really needs an intervention. I'm sure you know by now Kandi is engaged to AJ, father of six (with four babymamas). Kandi has one daughter from a previous relationship. Her daughter is uncomfortable with the engagement and her mother is positively against it. Well, Kandi recently told Essence.com she and AJ have put their engagement on hiatus.

What's the issue then, you say? Well...Kandi now has custody of his 12 -year-old twin daughters. Say what? I said Kandi is now taken over legal guardianship of two of his six children from AJ's mama. *sigh* She says it's because the girls need a strong female role model in her life and he would have taken them, but...blah, blah, blah. This man wasn't even raising his own daughters. He had his mama doing it. Now Kandi is the one pulling his plow for him. Yes, she would have been one of their guardians if they had gotten married, but she says they aren't even together right now. (For the record, I don't buy that for a minute. She is just trying to get some of the negative heat off her, in my opinion.)

Not only has she taken on the responsibility of raising his kids, but when asked what exactly what it is he does for a living Kandi says, "AJ over time has done a lot of things, including running this collection agency while we were together and he just recently bought into this strip club." So is she saying he can't keep a job? Nevermind that. I can't believe she thinks it is a good idea for her daughter's future stepfather to be a proprieter of a strip club. I really thought she had a good head on her shoulders. I just can't with them today.

Janet Jackson's tribute to her brother Michael was the highlight of the show.

Michael Jackson brought the house down with his performance at the MTV VMA's in 1995.

Kanye posted an apology on his website

Kanye posted an apology for his heckling during the VMA's:

"I'M SOOOOO SORRY TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND HER FANS AND HER MOM," Kanye wrote on his site, AP reported. "I SPOKE TO HER MOTHER RIGHT AFTER AND SHE SAID THE SAME THING MY MOTHER WOULD'VE SAID. SHE IS VERY TALENTED!"

Others aren't really buying his apology:

Pink tweeted about her annoyance with Kanye. "Kanye West is the biggest piece of sh-t on earth. Quote me," she wrote. "My heart goes out to Taylor Swift. She is a sweet and talented girl, and deserved her moment. She should know we all love her." She later said on the Today Show that the incident never would have happened if she had won because she had a cute Alexander McQueen purse with brass knuckles on it.

Now, I'm going to be honest here. I had heard Taylor Swift's name before but couldn't pick her out of a lineup before last night (and maybe still this morning). When I saw Kanye run up next to her on stage I thought it was part of the night's skits. After listening to what he had to say, I felt sorry for the girl. That was her first VMA and she is only 19. To her credit, Beyonce looked shocked and embarassed (though some are saying she and Kanye orchestrated the event). Maybe this was another Eminem-Sascha Baron Cohen type scam. If so, it was in poor taste just like so much of the awards show (Russell Brand's jokes, Lady Ga Ga's 'performance', etc.).

As far as Bey goes, it was just good PR for her to 'graciously' give up her award acceptance time to Taylor. If she hadn't, the backlash would have extended to her. Her PR team was just earning their keep. The same applies to her pre-show statement that Janet Jackson was one of her inspirations. This after her quote earlier this year: “I grew up upper class. Private school..My dad had a Jaguar. We’re African-American and we work together as a family, so people assume we’re like the Jacksons, but I didn’t have parents using me to get out of a bad situation.” Um, yeah. It doesn't sound much like she idolized her. More like just swaggerjacked her style and kept it moving.

They say...

Janet Jackson cried all night at the MTV VMA Awards last night because Kanye's thoughtless antics on stage took the spotlight off her brother Michael's tribute. The whole night was supposed to be an evening in honor of Michael Jackson.

Show of Hands....

How many of you asked your white girlfriend Susan to go see "All About Steve" at the movies this weekend and she was REALLY surprised when the movie started and everybody talked from the previews all the way to the end of the film (and the only other white people there were the ushers), how many of you took the kids to see UP for the fourth time and told them-no you ain't seein that again you'll be alone in theatre number 8, how many of you ladies had to pay off a bribe of a case Corona's, a liter and a half of Jack Daniels, 4 pizzas, a bucket of hot wangs, order NFL Ticket, and take the kids to the movies AGAIN so your man and his boys so the could watch the game on Sunday at your crib because he reluctantly took you to the movies on Saturday night, how many of you know a fine ass sista' named Frankie who goes to Spelman who swears she was an extra in this flick....

What I'm tryin' to say is Taylor Perry's, 'I Can Do Bad All By Myself' topped the boxoffice this weekend with a $24 million take. Five of the eight films of Mr. Perry's which usually open when there are slim or no new pickins at theatres have opened at number one.
