Iceberg Slim's "Pimp" Closer to Big Screen
One huge obstacle has been an ongoing lawsuit between the author's estate and the publisher (Beck died in 1992). With the suit recently settled, rights to the best-seller have been acquired outright by Rob Weiss, an executive producer of HBO's "Entourage," along with producers Mitch Davis, Ryan Drexler and Andrew Left.
Born in abject poverty, Beck became a pimp at 18 and eventually rose to kingpin status in the Chicago underworld. He had several stretches in prison, making one escape. After retiring from the business he became an insecticide salesman in Los Angeles.
During a phone conversation with a college professor, Beck mentioned that he had been a pimp, and the professor encouraged him to write an autobiography. Three months later, Beck had penned "Pimp." The autobiography has sold more than 5 million copies and is the second-best-selling book by a black man, after Alex Haley's "Roots."
"The story is really the birth of the American inner city, and it's an incredible tale of overcoming oppression," said Weiss, according to the Hollywood Reporter. "It speaks of a very specific time in America and its street culture. The book is filled with broken souls but shows how, in the end, Iceberg found a way to heal himself."
The quartet is looking for actors, writers and a director before bringing the project to a studio. Who do you think should play "Iceberg Slim"? Tyrese with a Rev. Al 'do?
Recession Converts London’s Pickpockets to Putpockets
Aware that people are suffering in the economic crisis, 20 former pickpockets have turned over a new leaf and are now trawling London’s tourist sites slipping money back into unsuspecting pockets.
Anything from 5 pounds to 20 pound notes is being surreptitiously deposited in unguarded pockets or open handbags in Trafalgar Square, Covent Garden and other busy spots.
The initiative, which runs until the end of August in London before being rolled out countrywide, is being funded by a broadband provider,TalkTalk, which says it wants to brighten up people’s lives in unusual ways.

But, the judge said Simpson must get the first $6,075 from the auction. Rosenberg said it was possible that figure would not be reached, and then Goldman would get nothing.
Because of the hotel room standoff in September 2007, Simpson was sentenced to nine to 33 years for convictions on armed robbery, kidnapping and other charges. He has applied for release on bond while he appeals.

Steven Spielberg to make movie out of racist book?
Legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg is working on a film depicting the title character of Tintin Au Congo (Tehn Tehn Aw), a controversial 1929 cartoon by Belgian illustrator Herge. The Brooklyn Library System took the unusual step of restricting access to the book after patrons and others complained the comic strip depicts Africans as simple-minded, less-than-human, savage monkeys. The comic strip has been criticised in the past as racist, colonialist, and depicting cruelty to animals; the writer and illustrator Herge himself repudiated his own work as the "sin of [his] youth."
Staff of the Library still have access to the book while members of the public may make appointments to view the tome. Bookseller Borders also took steps to restrict access to the book by moving it from the children's section to the adult graphic novels section. A spokesperson for the Spielberg project said the filmmaker--who has an adopted African-American son--would not utilize any objectionable material in the film.

Williams Sisters Buy Stake In Miami Dolphins
Tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams will be announced next week as Miami Dolphins limited ownership partners, a person familiar with the deal said.
Dolphins owner Stephen Ross indicated Monday that three limited partners would be announced next Tuesday and at least one would be African-American. Ross also has said he wants the ownership group to reflect South Florida's diversity. Ross has brought in Hispanic music personalities Emilio and Gloria Estefan, Marc Anthony and Ricky Ricardo as limited partners this summer.
The Williams sisters, who were raised in Compton, Calif., but live in Palm Beach Gardens, have won a combined 18 Grand Slam tennis titles and would be the Dolphins' first African-American ownership partners.

Former Giants star Plaxico Burress accepts surprise plea bargain, will spend two years in jail
Ex-Super Bowl hero Plaxico Burress took a surprise plea bargain Thursday that will land the talented but troubled wide receiver behind bars for two years.
The unexpected agreement with the Manhattan district attorney came nine months after Burress, 31, shot himself through the thigh with an illegal .40-caliber Glock in a crowded nightclub.
"Do you wish to plead guilty?" asked state Supreme Court Judge Michael Melkonian as Burress stood before him. "Is that what you want to do?"
"Yes, sir," replied a subdued Burress, who returns to court Sept. 22 for his official sentencing. He's expected to begin his jail term the same day. The plea came during what appeared to be a routine court appearance. Burress, whose deal included two years of probation, pleaded guilty to a reduced count of attempted criminal possession of a weapon.
Once he reports to jail, Burress - if he avoids trouble behind bars - should serve about 20 months, said his lawyer, Benjamin Brafman.
Assault Charge Against Jayson Williams Dismissed
An assault charge against former NBA star Jayson Williams stemming from a fight outside a North Carolina nightclub has been dismissed.
Multiple media outlets reported Wednesday that Wake County Assistant District Attorney Phillip Cowan dismissed the charge at the request of Ahmad Sulimon Nazari of Cary (after a new Land Rover was parked in his driveway over the weekend).
Authorities said Williams punched Nazari in the face outside a Raleigh nightclub in May. Williams was expected in court next week to answer to the misdemeanor charge.
Nazari was not immediately available for comment Wednesday night. His attorney did not immediately return a phone message seeking comment.
Williams, who played nine seasons, also faces a retrial on a reckless manslaughter charge in the shooting death of his driver, Costas "Gus" Christofi, at his New Jersey mansion. He has been free on bail since the 2002 shooting.
Chris Brown Apologizes....Again (can we move on already?)
Another Chris Brown apology has hit the net. This time C-Breezy is apologizing via song. I think it is high time the world bury this incident and move on to more pressing matters. I'm tired of the apologies, the speculation about their relationship, and the endless paparazzi sightings speculating on the number of lint particles on her tights and the color of her knickers. Enough already!
Kim and Reggie back together again?
Why they hooked up wasn’t yet known – her rep didn’t immediately comment – but both were in the Big Easy on business: Kardashian had a long-planned appearance at a Dress for Success charity event and Bush is in the Saints training camp to prepare for the NFL season.
Let me find out this whole breakup was just a publicity stunt for her tired ass show. Hmpf!

Caster Semenya wins 800m gold but cannot escape gender controversy
Caster Semenya's gold medal in tonight's 800m should have been the proudest moment of the South African teenager's life. But for the athlete whose gender has been scrutinised the world over in the last 24 hours, it came as no surprise that she was advised to shun the media after her title-winning race.
As the cameras settled on the athlete who has lived her whole life as a female, onlookers pored over their TV screens, studying the woman now rumoured to be a man. Controversy has dogged the 18-year-old since she posted a world leading personal best time of 1 minute 56.72 seconds – an eight second improvement on her time last year – to win gold at the African Junior Championships in Mauritius last month.
The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) says the following: "It's a medical issue. It's not an issue of cheating. We're more concerned for the person not to make this something which is humiliating for her and something which is going to affect her in a negative way. This is why you will appreciate we have to be discreet. She is a human being who was born as a woman and who has grown up all her life as a woman but who is now in a position where this is being questioned."

6 cops, 59 shots, 43 wounds, 1 dead man in Tennessee
...meanwhile, on Monday at a President Obama event about a dozen people in Phoenix, Arizona were walking around with guns including assault weapons.... (check video)
Alonzo Heyward (pictured above) carried a rifle around his low-rent Chattanooga neighborhood one day last month, ranting about suicide and ignoring the pleas of friends for hours before six city police officers surrounded him on his front porch and decided it had to end.
His father says Heyward told the officers, "I'm not out here to hurt anybody."
But police, who tried unsuccessfully to disarm Heyward, fired 59 rounds to kill him on July 18. The medical examiner found 43 bullet wounds in his chest, face, arms, hands, legs, buttocks and groin. Police contend Heyward was a danger to others and threatened the six officers.
Heyward, a 32-year-old moving company employee, was black. The six officers are white. They were temporarily placed on administrative leave but have since returned to work.

Spike Lee is throwing Michael Jackson a 51st Birthday Party
Michael Jackson - They Don't Care About Us (Official Music Video) -
You could say that Spike Lee always had a special connection to Michael Jackson: They were born a year apart, both to musical families. Back in the day, every Saturday morning, Lee, like many other black kids across the country, sat down in front of the TV, glued to the “Jackson 5” cartoons. “We’re of the same era,” Lee told The Root. “I wanted my Afro to be perfectly round like Michael’s, all that stuff.”
Years later, the two ended up working together, collaborating on a music video for “They Don’t Care About Us” in Brazil. The two never worked together again, but Lee found himself hit hard by Jackson’s death.
So he decided to throw Michael a birthday party.
Not just any birthday party: A “Brooklyn style block party,” Lee says. “It’s going to just be how we do it, Brooklyn style, I’ll leave it at that. It’s going to be a joyous, festive, celebratory party.” Free.
Anybody and everybody is invited to attend Michael Jackson’s 51st birthday party on Saturday, August 29, from noon to 5 p.m., at Fort Greene Park, Brooklyn, New York. DJ Spinna will be spinning all things Jackson, from the Jackson 5 to the Jacksons to Michael Jackson. The Brooklyn borough president will be on hand to declare Aug. 29 “Michael Jackson Day.”

Terrence finally let the perm go
I have to admit, I am secretly tickled by Black men and their perms. The very sight of Rev. Al, James Brown, Prince, Michael, Snoop, Katt, and Terrence is always guaranteed to elicit a tiny smile from me. I don't know what it is. I guess I'm imagining what must be going through their minds every time it is time for a touch up. What is it that pushes them to step across into what is usually considered Black women's territory?
Even after he came to the Academy Awards ceremony and acted stuck up when Three 6 Mafia got their statue for the theme song to Hustle & Flow, Terrence Howard insisted on holding onto his pimp hair. Given his penchant for going to the beach and pool, I imagine he spent numerous hours a month in the hairdresser's chair. That must have been cutting into his designated time to shop and compare baby wipe brands for the women in his life because he recently traded his roller set for a low cut. I for one think he looks 10 years younger.

Madonna just turned 51
Madonna celebrated her 51st birthday Sunday onstage during her Sticky & Sweet tour in Warsaw, Poland. I have been a Madonna fan since childhood. At turns vulgar and profane, genius and untamed, she never was the best singer or actress (Body of Lies and Evita anyone?) but she is an entertainer in the truest sense of the word. Madonna always keeps it interesting and fresh. She always knew how to keep her name in people's mouths. Even the Pope had to sit up and take notice! When you have a free moment, strike a pose in Madge's honor.
P.S. Check her out kissing the Black priest and dancing in front of the burning crosses in her slip. Her imagery in this video got her Pepsi commercial pulled from the airways and denounced by the Pope! LOL, at the singer at 3:24 is looking at her like "you know you going to hell right?"

The 52-year-old comedian and actor is author of the best-selling book "Act Like a Lady, Think Like a Man," which has been atop the New York Times Best Seller's list since February. Don Diva Magazine Head Shot and Killed
Miami journalist and President of Don Diva magazine, Samuel Ferguson, was shot and killed on Friday, Aug. 14, while driving on the Florida Turnpike.
According to police, Ferguson was heading north on the highway in his maroon 2001 Chevrolet Impala, when a black four-door car carrying several passengers pulled alongside him and fired several shots, causing him to crash into the concrete divider. Ferguson was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 47.
Ferguson was hired at Don Diva nine months ago, in an effort to strengthen the magazine's Florida readership. He was also known as Samuel Silvasteen and "P Man" Sam, and was considered by many to have been a Miami rap pioneer. He was involved in Miami’s rap scene before 2 Live Crew put it on the map. He also had a long history of arrests for weapons and battery, and spent several years in prison on a drug charge in the '80s.
Ferguson was embroiled in a heated controversy last October, when rapper Rick Ross was exposed as having once been a correctional officer, and blamed Ferguson, whom he'd known prior to his hiring at Don Diva, saying "Ferguson is a liar, he's an informant, he's a rat, he's a b----...get at me in the streets n---- you know how we play. This s--- about to get deeper than rap."
Don Diva's Editor-in-Chief, Tiffany Chiles, claimed that Ferguson was attempting to use his position at the magazine to distance himself from his criminal past. "We are deeply saddened by this tragic and senseless incident," Chiles added. "Sam was not just the president of Don Diva South, he was a family friend for over 20 years. Sam was our brother. He was well respected and loved my many. He will be missed."
Study: Most US Currency Laced With Cocaine
A study that tested paper money found that nearly 90 percent of currency had traces of cocaine on it in big metropolitan areas in both Canada and the United States, National Geographic reports .
The study conducted by the University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth tested currency from 30 big cities in five countries -- the U.S., Brazil, Canada, China and Japan. Brazil came in a close third to the North American nations with contamination on 80 percent of paper money. On the other end of the spectrum, in China and Japan, cocaine was present on less than 20 percent of banknotes.
Researchers were surprised to find evidence that more Americans are using the illegal drug, said study leader Yuegang Zuo. In a similar study by the same team in 2007 , 67 percent of U.S. bills were found to be tainted with cocaine. The drug gets on paper money during drug transactions and when people roll bills to snort cocaine powder, Zuo said.
The new findings could "help raise public awareness about cocaine use and lead to greater emphasis on curbing its abuse," Zuo said in an email.
The U.S. is the world's biggest cocaine market with an estimated 6 million Americans use cocaine each year, consuming somewhere between 259-447 tons of it, according to the UN World Drug Report .
Baltimore, Boston, Detroit and Washington, D.C., were among the cities with highest concentration of cocaine-laced bills at nearly 95 percent.
