Plus-Sized Nightclubs?

Move over, it's Saturday night at Club Bounce and people are bouncing onto the dance floor in a big, big way. These are big, big people, all dressed to the nines and many tipping the scales at 250, maybe 300 pounds.

That's because this expansive nightclub a couple blocks from the Pacific Ocean, with its flashing lights, friendly atmosphere and wall-rattling hip-hop sounds, caters specifically to fat people. Not just any fat people, either, but fat people who are proud to call themselves fat people. The club, with a capacity of 400, attracts relatively equal numbers of men and women, although the owner says about three-quarters of the women tend to be heavy, while only about a quarter of the men are (you know dat's right!).

Such clubs are still a relatively new phenomenon, however, with a handful scattered across California, mainly in coastal cities from San Diego to San Francisco.
"The whole thing really started on the internet, with clubhouse parties organized online," says Kathleen Divine, who runs another Southern California plus-size club, the Butterfly Lounge. "Now you see a lot more large people out in public, not hiding behind their keyboards anymore."

  1. i'm all about loving yourself the way that you are, but i'm tired of black people acting like being unhealthy is a great thing. it normally takes diabetes, hypertension, a diabetic coma, or a heart attack or stroke for these folks to realize that being obese isn't cute. one of my best friends is morbidly obese and its heartbreaking. when we go out together, she walks really slowly and she gets winded going up and down a few steps.
i know that its not easy to lose weight, but people complain about how hard it is while drinking lots of soda and eating bullshit. you don't even have to exercise. or you don't have to do heavy exercises a walk around the neighborhood once or twice a week will do wonders for you. i'm sorry but this shit just makes me sick. its not about physical activity, its about saying to yourself that you want to be here to see your kids grow up.

  2. But what does any of that have to do with people going out and having a good time? The label is right. Big girls need love too.

  4. What the hell is red eye gravy? Big people still want to hang out and have a good time. It's not like they're sitting there going "fuck all the skinny people. I like having this size 28 ass." Like Monique did before her husband pressured her to lose the weight then cheated on her anyway.
