Attendees at the Essence luncheon reflect on the significance of the Oscars for women of color

Fashion at the Oscars: M'onique's dress killed it!

Monique's dress shined last night, which was fitting because it was HER night.  She was the best-dressed out of all the Best Supporting Actress nominees last night, and her hair and make up were flawless.  Gabby Sidibe was dressed in bold electric blue while her mother appeared in a classic black dress.  I was happy to see Gabby walk the red carpet with such confidence, but I thought her dress could have been bolder, less classic, and more flattering than it was.  I also felt she needed a bit more color in her makeup given the bright color of the dress.  Zoe Saldana appeared in shades of iridescent lavender.  I thought the bodice of the dress could have been more flattering given her petite frame, but her hair and make up were classic and tasteful.  Host Sherrie Shepperd sported what must have been an industrial brassiere to support her unbalanced look in that dress.  Her stylist also could have chosen something much more flattering given her recent and very public weight loss.  Host Vivica Fox chose a sleeveless black number that showed off her curves to perfection; unfortunately, her weave was not on point.  As a matter of fact, it was not even on her head properly.  Note to her hair stylist, a natural hairline for a woman does not begin all the way at the crown of her head.  What weave was there looked good, but her giant forhead and naked front of her head were distracting the entire time she was on camera.  Sherrie Shepperd should have hooked her up.

Washington D.C. legalizes same-sex marriage

Same-sex couples can start applying for marriage licenses today in the District of Columbia.  The marriage bureau expects as many as 200 additional couples to line up for marriage applications today; there is already a line forming outside the building, which does not open for another five minutes. The same-sex marriage law was introduced in the 13-member D.C. Council in October and had almost unanimous support from the beginning. The bill passed and D.C. Mayor Adrian M. Fenty signed it in December.  The law had to undergo a congressional review period that expired Tuesday paving the way for the District to begin accepting applications this morning.  Couples who apply today will have to wait until March 9th to have their ceremony due to a mandatory waiting period.  D.C. is only the sixth place in the country where same-sex marriages can be legally performed; the other are Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.

Joe Jackson granted access to Michael Jackson's medical records

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff ruled that Joe Jackson can receive his son, Michael Jackson’s, medical records from the UCLA Medical Center. Joe Jackson's attorney, Brian Oxman, sought the records as part of an effort to obtain a $15,000 montly stipend for Joe from Michael's estate; Michael provided for his three children and his mother, but excluded his his father from his will. The judge will review the records first before releasing them to Oxman. Beckloff also ruled Jackson can only review records generated on or after the date of Michael's death so as to not violate doctor-patient confidentiality. Anyone granted review of the medical records will be required to sign a confidentiality agreement. Jackson and Oxman stated they are also considering filing a wrongful death lawsuit in Michael's death.
