Couples Retreat: no Blacks allowed

Universal Studios is catching heat for a movie poster for the flop recent release Couples Retreat. The U.S. poster for the movie features the four couples showcased in the film standing thigh-deep in a lagoon. The UK version of the movie poster omits the African American couple played by Faizon Love and Kali Hawk and shifts over one of the white couples for a tighter shot. Critics of the advertising change call the omission racist, akin to Microsoft's partial race change for a man in one of its Polish ads. For its part, Universal says it intended no offense and was simply adjusting the poster to showcase better-known stars for its international market.

It is intersting to note Faizon Love has fourth billing in this large ensemble cast above Kristin Davis of Sex and the City and Melrose Place (the old one); Kali Hawk is second to last above Jean Reno who survived the cut in the list of cast names. I could (perhaps) begin to consider Universal's explanation if both Love and Hawk were bottom billing, but they are not. The only widely recognized name--in the U.S. or elsewhere--is Vince Vaughn's anyway. Additionally, one of Love's scenes steals the whole show in and otherwise ho-hum movie. For goodness sakes, Love and Hawk are so far behind everyone else in the U.S. poster it looks like they wandered into the shot from another retreat next door.

Granted the tight shot is a better one, but it would have been better advised to simply feature Vaughn and his mate on a modified poster. Removing only one couple just seems so...obvious. For those crying "Oh, but the second shot is a different shot!" please look closely. The UK poster features some pretty amateur photoshopping. Some character's poses are exactly the same as the U.S. poster whereas others are only slightly different. I believe it to be a composite of other promotional shots. The bottom line is: if they had room to add a huge red suitcase, they had room to keep Love and Hawk.
Universal issued an apology and has scrapped plans to use the modified poster in their marketing materials, but the damage is done.

LaToya's major motion picture debut...

Toya's deleted scene from the motion picture...'Bruno'

The Memphis Grizzlies announced yesterday that the strained one-year contract with 10-time All-Star and former league MVP Allen Iverson has ended after he played only three games. After the AP quoted owner Michael Heisley last week saying the team would "gladly" trade Iverson if a better prospect came along, The Grizzlies insist Iverson's departure is a mutual decision. He officially began an indefinite leave of absence on Nov. 7 to deal with "a personal issue".

General Manager chris Wallace released a statement saying, “Because of personal matters that forced him to leave the team on November 7, Allen will step away from the game at this time, allowing him to focus on those matters. As a result, we will be ending our contractual agreement with Allen, which will allow both parties to move forward. We wish Allen the best.”

Ron Artest capitalizes on Ariza's Cinderella moment

During Sunday's Rockets-Lakers game Trevor Ariza lost his ruby red sneaker on the court during an early defensive possession. Ron Artest saw an opportunity and took advantage of it by tossing Ariza's shoe out-of-bounds and shooting a three.

Janet Jackson's "Make Me: Behind the Scenes"

Janet will be discussing her brother Michael's death, her new album, and her relationship with Jermaine Dupri on television next Wednesday evening. From what I've heard, she blames Dr. Conrad Murray for Michael's death. It will be interesting to see what else she has to add. I just hope she doesn't capitalize off the situation like some others who shall remain nameless...

A New Flava in ya ear...

Flava Flav owes the State of California about $200,000 in back taxes and hasn't found a taker for his proposed series, "Flava Gets His GED" so he has decided to become a Doritos director. As part of Doritos' annual "Crash the Super Bowl" ad contest, in which users are asked to submit their own ads to compete for a $1 million prize. "He did this totally randomly and unprovoked," says a source at the company. "And it's actually pretty damn good."

Janet Jackson made an appearance

Janet Jackson made an appearance in Los Angeles at The Grove for a Tribute Dance event. She looks fantastic, doesn't she? She and long-time beau Jermaine Dupri are supposed to be an item again. It's a shame they couldn't work out their differences in the immediate aftermath of Michael's death. It's good to see her smiling again.

A&E still wants the Shaunie and Shaq Show

Despite Shaunie having uprooted the kids, moved to California, and filed for divorce from her NBA star hubby Shaquille O'Neill, the A & E network (do they ever show any art?) is still interested in their show. A & E executives say they have viewed the pilot for Shaq and Shaunie's reality show and are still very interested in purchasing espisodes of the show. Haven't they learned anything from watching the Jon & Kate Plus 8 trainwreck? I don't see this being good for the O'Neill children in any way. The O'Neills have currently put filming of the show on hold.

Are you surprised?

Khloe Kardashian and Lamar Odom's fake marriage may be on the rocks. It might have something to do with the checks being cashed and the episode having already aired on her show.

Flava Flav owes back taxes

flava flav Pictures, Images and Photos

What time is it? Time to pay the tax man. Public Enemy member and reality TV star Flava Flav is said to owe more than $38,000 in back taxes to the IRS. If Flav is unable to come up with the money in a timely manner it is possible he may do jail time. 9-1-1 may be a joke in his town, but the IRS breathing down your back is no joking matter. Australia issues historic apology

The Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd issued a historic apology today to thousands of impoverished British children shipped to Australia with the promise of a better life, triggering calls for compensation for the abuse and neglect that many suffered. Approximately 150,000 British children may have been shipped over a period of 350 years through programs run by the government, religious groups and children's charities. The relocations were touted as a way to give the children a chance at life--and to keep the British Empire supplied with white workers in its outposts. Many of the children ended up in institutions where they labored as farm hands ore were physically or sexually abused. The program formally ended 40 years ago; approximately 7,000 survivors of the program who still live in Australia.
